Petition President Bush to change his genocide legacy

Please sign this petition, urging President Bush to rewrite his legacy of allowing genocide to happen by using the last year of his presidency to push for a stronger UNAMID protection force in Darfur. (Paper version also available)

Dear President Bush,

Over the past five years, hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost to genocide in Darfur, Sudan. All of those years and all of those lives passed with you as President. President Clinton has said that genocide in Rwanda is his biggest regret, and he now has to explain his inaction over and over again. Will this be you in the coming years? You still have time to change your legacy. You have the power to take immediate and concrete action to save the millions of innocent civilians who continue to be in grave danger. Without this, your legacy will be one of genocide. We urge you to use your position of leadership and power to rally the international community to bring immediate protection to civilians, peace to Darfur, justice to the victims, and the rebuilding of their lands.

Please take the following actions for the people of Darfur:

  • Convene an UNSC emergency session to address obstructions and delays to the UNAMID deployment.
  • Issue a strong Presidential Statement condemning the government of Sudan’s obstructions and requiring the government to take the explicit actions set out above.
  • If the government of Sudan fails to take those actions within 30 days, the US and UN Security Council should immediately impose targeted sanctions on key government officials, including President Omar Al-Bashir, for non-compliance with its obligations under resolution 1769.
